In the following paragraphs, I'm trying to give some tips and advises from my perspective.

What to buy and what to use?

The simple answer is: it is up to you. No one but you is able to make your experiences and develop your preferences. Nevertheless, you can discover webpages and yt-channels giving advise (For the German speaking highly recommended: https://www.youtube.com/@Glatt-Rasiert). I find many of them helpful and worth taking note of. That being said, I'm adding my chanterelle on a few points.

How to start?

It isn't advisable to invest much money, if you are just about to start traditional wet-shaving. One has to be honest, the blades are thin and sharp. There is a risk to cut oneself or even to get into some kind of blood bath. Having experienced that, quite a few people end  the journey dissappointed right after the opening stages.  Bad feelings will be eased, when not too much money has been spent.

First, it will be sufficient to buy five things: a safety razor, a brush, an easy to lather soap or cream, a safety razor, some blades, and an after shave lotion/balm.

The brush

Basically, there are four types of brushes (each type comes with a wide price range).

  • badger,
  • boar,
  • horse,
  • synthetic

There are pros and cons for each. But I would choose an affordable synthetic brush, for it is quite easy to get a decent lather and maintenance is simple. Should I drop names, maybe I shouldn't, though: The Wilkinson Sword brush with synthetic fiber could be a good choice for starters. There are many other good brushes and vendors out there.
